Vocabulary Module 9: Familie

In this module, you will learn some vocabulary to talk about family (die Familie) using Das Digitale Wörterbuch der Deutschen Sprache (DWDS), a large electronic collection of German texts known as a corpus.  Let’s explore what words German speakers use to talk about family and family members. Go to the DWDS homepage and type Familie in the search box. You will be taken to a page that gives you a lot of information about this word, but we will focus on the so-called ‘word cloud’ which is available in the Typische Verbindungen section.

This word cloud shows the words that commonly occur with the word Familie; such words are known as collocates. The larger the word in the image is, the more often it co-occurs with Familie. You can also see a numerical representation of the frequency of co-occurrence by looking at the Überblick table for Familie accessible through the Detailliertere Informationen link above the word cloud.

Now, let’s review some common kinship terms. Search for the word Mutter from the DWDS main page and go to the Typische Verbindungen section (word cloud). Then, go to the Detailliertere Informationen link above the word cloud and scroll down to the hat in Koordination mit table. You can see a list of many kinship terms that are frequently used with Mutter (e.g., Mutter und Vater). You can probably guess the meaning of most of them as they look similar to their English equivalents. To see more kinship terms, repeat the same steps for the word Geschwister (‘sibling’) and look at its hat in Koordination mit table.

It is very important to learn the German nouns together with their articles. Look at the 15 kinship terms in the list below and identify 6 nouns that go with der, 6 nouns that go with die, and 3 nouns that go with das.

Note: Please keep in mind that das Enkelkind is a gender-neutral term. To describe a male grandchild, the word der Enkel is used, and die Enkelin describes a female grandchild. The plural form of both latter nouns is die Enkel.

Like in English, you can build other kinship terms following the Stiefmutter model. Fill in the blanks with translations of the given English terms in the sentences from the DWDS corpus die ZEIT below:

Search DWDS for the words Mutter and Vater and look at their word clouds. You can probably see that the adjective alleinerziehend is frequently used with both nouns to refer to single mothers and fathers. However, if you look at the word cloud for alleinerziehend, you will mostly likely recognize that many nouns describe occupations used by females corresponding with being a single mother. Can you figure out what these occupations are?
