Adjective Endings 3

In this module, you will learn about the mixed declension of adjectives, which is used whenever there is an indefinite article preceding the adjective. You will practice using such adjectives with nouns in the nominative case.

Activity 1

First, let’s review some German nouns with their articles by using Das Digitale Wörterbuch der Deutschen Sprache (DWDS), a large electronic collection of German texts known as a corpus.  We’ll start with three nouns: Wohnung (apartment), Haus (house) and Raum (room) from that corpus. Read the Beispiele (examples) below, paying careful attention to the adjectives and their endings.

After comparing all three nouns and their adjectives, choose the statement that best reflects what you have noticed thus far.

Indefinite adjective endings with feminine nouns:

Warum nicht eine kleine Wohnung, wie Petra sie hatte?

Gerda hingegen hatte einen eindrucksvolleren Hintergrund–: eine große Wohnung in guter Gegend, schöne Kleider und sogar Schmuck.

Indefinite adjective endings with neuter nouns:

Das war ein kleines Haus an der Laugna, mit nur zwei Stuben, einer kleinen Dachkammer und einer großen Werkstätte.

Indefinite adjective endings with masculine nouns:

Das Kabarett heißt kurzweg das Kommödchen: ein kleiner Raum, sozusagen ein geistiges Boudoir, in dem sich Heinrich Heine und Johan Fischart wahrscheinlich wohlgefühlt hätten.

Schließlich ist ja auch die Tatsache, daß ein großer Raum von den Greueln des Krieges verschont bleibt, ein Ziel, das wirklich erstrebenswert ist.
